Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weld test coupon?

A weld test coupon is a sample joint, usually two short pieces of pipe or plate, that a welder joins for practice or for a qualification test. Test coupons are inspected visually and then tested, typically with bend tests or radiography, depending on the code.

What bevel angle do pipe weld test coupons use?

Most pipe coupons use a 37.5 degree bevel on each piece, which forms a 75 degree included angle. The land and root opening come from the procedure your students are testing to, and some procedures, such as line pipe work, call for a 30 degree bevel instead.

Is it cheaper to buy pre-beveled coupons or make your own?

It depends on your volume and how fast you can prep. Compare the delivered price per coupon with your pipe cost per coupon plus prep labor and consumables. Programs running many booths often come out ahead cutting their own, as long as prep takes seconds rather than minutes.

Can a pipe beveling machine run on single-phase power?

Some can. MSI can build the C3A and C5A ChamferMate for 240-volt single-phase power at additional cost, but the C5H and C8H are not available in single phase. Let us know what power your shop has when you request a quote.

How much training do students need to run a ChamferMate?

Very little. Any non-skilled worker can run our machines without special training. Setup is simple, and we provide machine manuals and phone support from our team in Beaumont, Texas.
