What is a roll stamping machine?

A roll stamping machine presses a raised character die into the surface of a part while the part rotates against it, leaving a permanent impression. It is the most common method for marking the ends of round stock like bolts, studs, and shafts, because the die and the part do the work with no operator judgment involved. MSI MarkMate machines use this method.

What is the difference between roll stamping and dot peen marking?

Roll stamping presses a full character die into the part in one continuous motion. Dot peen marking uses a carbide stylus to strike a series of individual dots that form each character. Roll stamping is faster on cylindrical parts and leaves a cleaner, deeper mark. Dot peen is more flexible on flat or irregular surfaces and can change what it marks from part to part.

Why do metal parts need permanent marking?

Traceability. Heat numbers, lot codes, grade marks, and part numbers have to survive handling, heat treat, coating, and years of service. A mark that is pressed into the metal stays readable long after ink, labels, and tags are gone.

How many characters can a MarkMate machine mark?

That depends on the die and the diameter of the part. Every MSI marking machine is built to order around your part and your marking process, so the die gets sized to fit what you need on the part. Can a marking machine run inline with a parts feeder?

Yes. The AMM-24 AutoMarkMate is built to run with our FeedMate cylindrical parts feeder, so parts load, mark, and discharge without an operator handling each one. That setup is worth looking at when you are marking in volume and would rather have that operator somewhere else on the floor.

How long does it take to train an operator on a marking machine?
