The MSI FeedMate®

Standard Features

  • Capable of feeding tubing blanks ½” to 1-1/2” diameter, 2” to 24” long
  • Feeder box will be made from ½” plate
  • The feeder will have lifting plates made of abrasion resistant plate approximately 400 BHN and guided by linear bushings on each side to maintain alignment.
  • Power for the feeder plates will be from a 2 HP 220/440-3-60 motor through a heavy-duty gearbox. A frequency drive with external adjustment will be used to allow the speed of the plates to be adjustable and provide a soft start for the plates.
  • The conveyor will have a 3/4 HP motor mounted to a worm gear reducer.
  • The conveyor chain will be a hardened steel silent type, 1” wide and will run at a fixed speed.
  • Parts will transfer axially off the end of the conveyor to downstream equipment.
  • The feed rate of parts will be in the 30 PPM range, which is largely dependent on the length of parts.

Available Options

  • Casters and locking pins
  • Escapement mechanism on the end of the conveyor to transfer parts 90 degrees off the side of the conveyor to downstream equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a step feeder?

A step feeder is a parts feeder that uses a stack of moving steps to lift parts out of a hopper one layer at a time and deliver them, oriented, to the machine. Each step raises a small number of parts to the next level until they reach the discharge point. It is a mechanical alternative to vibratory feeding.

How is a step feeder different from a vibratory bowl feeder?

A bowl feeder vibrates parts up a spiral track. A step feeder lifts them mechanically. Step feeders run quieter, handle finished and coated parts more gently, and change over between part sizes with less retooling. Bowl feeders handle a wider variety of part shapes. For cylindrical parts like bolts and studs, a step feeder is usually the better fit.

What parts can the FeedMate feed?

Cylindrical parts: bolts, studs, rods, shafts, and similar round stock. [CONFIRM: standard part diameter and length range.] Diameter and length range depend on how the feeder is configured for your parts, and every machine is built to order.

What machines can the FeedMate feed?

It feeds MSI chamfering machines and MarkMate marking machines, and it also feeds threading rollers and cylindrical grinders. If you are running a machine that takes round parts one at a time and an operator is loading it by hand, that is the application.

How many parts per minute can the FeedMate feed?

Feed rate is matched to the machine it is feeding rather than run flat out, so it comes down to part size and the cycle time downstream. [CONFIRM: typical feed rate range.] Tell us the part and the machine and we will size it.

Can the FeedMate work with equipment we already have?

Often, yes. Every MSI machine is made to order and we build feeders to fit the process they are going into. Send us the machine you want fed, a sample part, and your floor layout, and we will tell you what is possible before you commit to anything.
